A Christian’s Mission is the Great Commission
“Then Jesus came to them and said, ‘All power in heaven and on earth is given to me. So go and make followers of all people in the world. Baptize them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach them to obey everything that I have taught you, and I will be with you always, even until the end of this age.’” – Matthew 28:19-20
A Christian’s mission is to go out into the world and make disciples for Jesus. It is done by going where God calls us to go and telling people the good news about Jesus. That could be going to another country, across the street or in prison. The great commission also includes us teaching people to obey the commandments of Christ that are found in the New Testament and teaching them about baptism.
By the authority of Jesus that was given to Him by God after His death and resurrection, we are commanded to listen to Him. Listening to Him involves us going out of our comfort zone and sharing the gospel to everyone we meet. The gospel of Jesus is not restricted anymore to a certain religious group or race like before Jesus’ death and resurrection. Before then, the teachings of the laws of God were only for the Jewish people. After His death and resurrection, He made the gospel available to everyone.
He gave His disciples this great commission before ascending into heaven that still applies for Christians today. Therefore, a Christian's mission is to follow in the disciples' footsteps and to share Jesus’ great commission of hope and salvation to a lost, dying and sinful world.
Prayer of the day:
Dear heavenly Father,
Jesus gave us a great commission to go into the world and tell people about Him. He is not limiting it to a group of people. We can go out into the world and share Your laws, the truth about Jesus and baptize people. All this is possible because of Jesus and His great commission for us to share the gospel with others. All honor and glory belong to You. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen!
