A Mighty King is Born
“The angel said to her, ‘Don’t be afraid, Mary; God has shown you, his grace. Listen! You will become pregnant and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of King David, his ancestor. He will rule over the people of Jacob forever, and his kingdom will never end.’” – Luke 1:30-33
When we hear of a king the image of him appears to be glamorous. We can imagine a man riding a horse with expensive clothes with a crown of jewels and gold on his head with an army of soldiers by his side ready to fight for the king who lives in a castle. However, the King Luke is referring to is not like an earthly king but of a different kind of king who is like no other. This King is born from the family of David who came from the family of Abraham (Matthew 1:1). This King is Jesus.
What makes Jesus so different than other kings? The answer is that God gave Him power to rule over everything – not just one nation or country. Jesus is in charge of everything. In Matthew 28:18, Jesus makes His authority clear,
“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.”
Jesus is like no other king because He was born not in a castle but in a manger (Luke 2:7). Also, from the time of His birth, people were trying to kill Him (Matthew 2:16). He never had an army of soldiers to protect Him and His castle. However, one day, He will return as judge to judge the whole world and to rule as eternal King forever (Revelation 11:15, 2 Timothy 4:1, John 5:26-28).
Jesus is a wonderful and mighty King. He came to save people from their sins (Luke 19:10). He was willing to die and suffer for people (Romans 5:8). Therefore, during this time of year near Christmas, it is a time for all to honor Jesus by remembering the birth of a King. It is also a day to celebrate His kingdom that is to come. It will be a kingdom where Jesus will rule. It will never be destroyed and will be a place that His people can reign with Him forever and ever, Amen (Daniel 2:44, Revelation 22:3)!
Prayer of the day:
Dear heavenly Father,
We want to celebrate this time of year since it is a time when our King was born. Jesus, our King is like no other. He is powerful and almighty. All honor and glory belong to Him. He is worth praising because He was a faithful obedient King that showed love by dying on the cross for our sins. Thank you for allowing us to be part of Your royal family. It is a great honor to be a member of. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen!
