Being a Faithful Servant of God

Can you imagine what it would be like if God and Jesus tell us “you did well, and you were good and loyal servants.” That would be the best compliment especially coming from our Creator and Savior. We want God to know that we will try to be loyal servants meaning He can count on us to do what is right and what we were called to do. This is part of being a good and loyal servant even when we sin and make mistakes.

A faithful servant of God will not be perfect and will likely sin. That is why God provides us help from the Holy Spirit. He helps us in our time of weakness to sin (Romans 8:26). Despite our sin, God will not stop using us to accomplish His will. We see many other servants of God that were murderers like the apostle (Saul) Paul and Moses. Paul persecuted Christians and Moses killed an Egyptian man and hid him in the sand (Acts 8:1-3, Exodus 2:11-12). Look at Jonah: God called him to go and preach to the people of Nineveh, but he ran from God (Jonah 1:3). He did not want to go since he disliked the people of Nineveh. They were considered Israel's enemies, and he did not want God to forgive them for their wickedness.

Despite our flaws, we are supposed to show similar characteristics of God as His servants. The Bible lists how a servant should act. Ephesians 4:2 tells us a servant should always be humble, gentle, and patient, accepting each other in love. In 2 Timothy 2:24-26 it says that a servant of the Lord must not quarrel but must be kind to everyone, a good teacher, and patient. It goes on to say that servants must gently teach those who disagree. This means we need to be prepared to give an account for why we believe the way we do about the scriptures and be ready to stand up for the gospel to those who disagree with its teachings (1 Peter 3:15).

We act this way because God made us what we are in Christ Jesus and made us to do good works which He planned in advance for us to live our lives doing (Ephesians 2:10). When we go and do what God calls us to do, it shows that we are good and faithful servants. God also expects us to use what He has given us and not to waste our spiritual gifts. When we do, others can see it and it will bring glory to our God forever and ever. Amen!
