Being Set Free from the Bondage of Sin
“We know that our old life died with Christ on the cross so that our sinful selves would have no power over us, and we would not be slaves to sin. Anyone who has died is made free from sin’s control.”- Romans 6:6-7
No one likes having something or someone control them. We like our freedom to do what we want. Before becoming a Christian, we were once a slave to sin. Some may not have realized how much power sin has in our life. The Apostle Paul knew its power. In Romans 7:15-20, he describes how he struggled with sin:
“I do not understand the things I do. I do not do what I want to do, and I do the things I hate. And if I do not want to do the hated things I do, that means I agree that the law is good. But I am not really the one who is doing these hated things; it is sin living in me that does them. Yes, I know that nothing good lives in me—I mean nothing good lives in the part of me that is earthly and sinful. I want to do the things that are good, but I do not do them. I do not do the good things I want to do, but I do the bad things I do not want to do. So if I do things I do not want to do, then I am not the one doing them. It is sin living in me that does those things.”
We will always struggle and be tempted to sin; however, God is faithful and will provide us with a way out during a sinful situation (1 Corinthians 10:13). We have the Holy Spirit to help us as well (John 14:26). The power sin had over us was death, the devil’s ability to deceive us and our continual disobedience to God. Jesus’ death broke its power and all the bondage it had over us. We had a reason to fear death because the penalty for sin is death (Romans 6:23). But through God’s grace, Jesus paid the penalty for our sins that freed us from the bondage of eternal punishment.
Prayer of the day:
Dear heavenly Father,
You are very kind to allow us to be free from sin that used to control us. With Jesus, we do not have to be scared of dying or be a slave to the devil or to our sinful desires anymore. We pray that You keep us from our evil ways that used to enslave us. Thank you for Jesus. Because of Him we do not have to suffer eternal punishment that we deserve. In Jesus’ name we prayer, Amen!
