Created in the Image of God

Created in the Image of God
“This is the family history of Adam. When God created human beings, he made them in his own likeness. He created them male and female, and on that day, he blessed them and named them human beings.” – Genesis 5:1-2

When you look at a mirror, what do you see? You see yourself, right? Sure you do, but you should also see your creator, God in you. Humans were created in God’s image from the beginning of time. We cannot be like God physically since He is spirit, but we can represent His character. He is patient, slow to anger, shows mercy, does not lie, and does so much more.

However, the sin of Adam and Eve changed human beings’ relationship with and their likeness of God. Adam was created and placed on earth to represent God but failed. When we sin, we represent the evil one instead of God. The evil one is Satan. Satan is against God and His people and will do anything to hurt God and us which could include tempting us to sin, putting false ideas about God’s goodness our minds and trying to convince us we are better without God. There are instances in the Bible when Satan went to God like a little kid tells their teacher about another kid, “look what Tommy did. Are you going to do something about it?" Satan is an accuser and will point out what we have done (Revelation 12:10). He did it before with Joshua in Zechariah 3:1-2 and will do it again.

Christians are God’s people, and the good news is that Christ’s death makes us a new creation. Because of Him, we are made new and now can represent God and His likeness. Jesus restored our broken relationship with God. We can now with help from the Holy Spirit be the people God created us to be. Second Corinthians 5:17-19 describes how we are transformed in the likeness of God:

“If anyone belongs to Christ, there is a new creation. The old things have gone; everything is made new! All this is from God. Through Christ, God made peace between us and himself, and God gave us the work of telling everyone about the peace we can have with him. God was in Christ, making peace between the world and himself. In Christ, God did not hold the world guilty of its sins. And he gave us this message of peace.”

Prayer of the day:

Dear heavenly Father,

Thank you for creating us in your likeness. Your great image shines throughout the earth and in our reflection of You. Please allow the Holy Spirit to dwell in our hearts so others can witness Your goodness and give You praise. You are worthy of praise. All honor and glory belong to our Savior, Jesus Christ. In His splendid name we pray, Amen!
