How Does the Holy Spirit Work in a Believer’s Life?
“But I tell you the truth, it is better for you that I go away. When I go away, I will send the Helper to you. If I do not go away, the Helper will not come.” -John 16:7
Jesus told His disciples that He would be leaving them, but that it was a good thing because when He did, God would be sending them a helper. The helper is the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is also there for us. God provides the Holy Spirit to do things that we cannot do on our own like understanding the Scriptures, act like Jesus, or love those who are hard to love.
When we become a believer, God gives us the Holy Spirit to dwell in us forever and to start working in our minds and hearts to become more like Jesus (1 Corinthians 3:16, Romans 8:9). The Spirit helps us to think like Jesus by opening our minds to the truth of the Gospel (John 16:13). He also helps us to act like Jesus by giving us the fruit of the Spirit. The fruit of the Spirit produces fruit in us like love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23).
The Holy Spirit is also our advocate (John 14:26). Along with Jesus, the Spirit pleads to God for us when we do something unholy. When we sin, it makes the Holy Spirit sad (Ephesians 4:30). The Spirit is a gift from God who guides us when we pray so we know exactly what to pray for. He also gives us strength and wisdom in our weaknesses to prevent us from sinning (Acts 2:38, Romans 8:26).
Prayer of the day:
Dear heavenly Father,
Thank you for sending the Holy Spirit to us. Without the Holy Spirit we cannot do what You want us to do on our own. We need the Holy Spirit to help us become more like Christ. We humbly pray that You will let the Holy Spirit remain in our hearts and minds because we need His help to pray the right words and to give us courage to tell others about Jesus. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen!
