How We Use Our Mouth Matters
“When you talk, do not say harmful things, but say what people need—words that will help others become stronger. Then what you say will do good to those who listen to you.” – Ephesians 4:29
Our mouth is a powerful tool. We can use it for good or for evil. What we say can help encourage others or tear them down. Is your mouth used for praying or telling people who are hurting that you love them? How about using our mouths to do evil like lying, gossiping about others, or swearing? How we use our mouths has the power to hurt or help someone who is suffering to become stronger.
Sometimes saying nothing is more helpful, especially for someone we know is going through something that we have never been through. Saying less is the best thing in that situation. God wants us to use our mouth to help build people up. Be careful when we do because careless words can hurt people more since the things we say cannot be taken back (Proverbs 12:18).
The words that come out of our mouth show the true motive of our hearts (Matthew 15:18). If what we say is always evil, then possibly our hearts are far from God. But if what we say is mostly caring, loving and encouraging, then it shows we have the Holy Spirit in us and the words we use are said to bring glory to God.
Prayer of the day:
Dear heavenly Father,
You gave us a mouth for many reasons. At times, we use it for evil instead of for good. We want to use it to encourage instead of tearing people down. We have it in us to use our mouth for evil more because we are sinners who like to hurt others with it. Please help us not to since we want to use it as a tool to help strengthen others who are hurting. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen!
