Marriage, an Institution Created by God
“Jesus answered, ‘Surely you have read in the Scriptures: When God made the world, “he made them male and female.” And God said, “So a man will leave his father and mother and be united with his wife, and the two will become one body.” So, there are not two, but one. God has joined the two together, so no one should separate them.’” - Matthew 19:4-6
God created the institution of marriage; therefore, He has a say in how people should honor it (Hebrews 13:4). If God created marriage, then it is a holy institution that needs to be kept sacred. It is kept sacred by honoring God and keeping it the way He created it. He does not want us to change what He designed to fit into what we want because marriage has a special meaning for believers since marriage represents Christ’s love for His church (Ephesians 5:22-32).
For that reason, God takes marriage seriously and will judge and punish anyone who dishonors it (Hebrews 13:4). Dishonoring marriage can include having an affair, having a same sex marriage, watching porn, or even thinking sexually about someone other than your spouse (1 Corinthians 7:2, Matthew 5:27-28, 1 Corinthians 6:9-10, Matthew 19:9, Romans 1:26-27, Leviticus 18:22).
In Matthew 19:4-6, Jesus reminds us that God created marriage and how He wants it to be. It is an institution that God created to be only between a man and a woman. The man and woman will leave their parents and be joined together by God to become one. When He does, no one should separate them. The Bible warns of the consequences to those who do not keep the marriage vow or do something sinful outside of a marriage that God ordained. He said that they will be punished (Hebrews 13:4, Romans 1:27).
Unfortunately, Satan convinces people that God is okay with marriage that is outside of what He created it to be, and that marriage is really about love. But not all love is ordained by God, but only a love that is between one man and one woman in a holy marriage. All other love is considered sinful to God, and He does not want us to be part of it because it is evil (1Thessalonians 4:3, Ephesians 5:3).
Prayer of the day:
Dear heavenly Father,
You created marriage as an institution to be taken seriously, and if we do not then there will be consequences. Sadly, marriage is not being taken seriously anymore and many are getting divorced. Please help marriages that are in trouble and are not living according to Your will for them. We need Your guidance to keep our marriages free from sexual sin because the payment for sin is death. For that reason, we need Jesus to help our marriages. In Jesus name we pray, Amen!
