Not My Body but Yours Oh Lord!

Not My Body but Yours Oh Lord!
“You should know that your body is a temple for the Holy Spirit who is in you. You have received the Holy Spirit from God. So you do not belong to yourselves, because you were bought by God for a price. So honor God with your bodies.” – 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

Paul reminds the Corinthians that they have a holy calling. The calling involves honoring their bodies as holy temples of God’s since the body is a place where the Holy Spirit dwells (1 Corinthians 3:16). If the Holy Spirit is in us, how could we ever think of taking our body and using it for vile, wicked or sinful things? We should not since the body is a shrine of the Holy Spirit and therefore, it does not belong to us. It is not our body, but God’s and He commands us to honor it as a holy temple.

As a holy temple where the Holy Spirit lives, we need to honor it as the Bible commands. If we are people of God, here are some things we should not do with our bodies:

“Those who sin sexually, worship idols, take part in adultery, those who are male prostitutes, or men who have sexual relations with other men, those who steal, are greedy, get drunk, lie about others, or rob—these people will not inherit God’s kingdom” (1 Corinthians 6:9-10).

What we do with our body matters. We need to use it to reflect God’s glory since we were bought with a price. We are the Lord’s both by creation and redemption. Jesus suffered and died to save us and redeem us from the penalty of sin, death and hell. With that being the case, our bodies do not belong to us. So, we need to do what we can to honor it by using it to glorify God instead of using it to fulfill our sinful desires.

Prayer of the day:

Dear heavenly Father,

Help us to use our bodies to honor You. You are the creator of it. You designed us in our mother’s womb. You also know how many hairs we have on our heads. What You do shows us how wonderful You are. That is why we want to honor our bodies in everything we do. Give us the way to do it. You are very powerful and full of grace, patience and love. All honor, glory and praise belong to You. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen!
