Sharpened Just Right
Turning a plain block of wood into a beautiful piece of art or a practical utensil brings great joy to a woodturner. To know the creation is something that will be appreciated makes the time spent on it worthwhile. Before any undertaking, however, a woodturner knows that all his tools need to be in working order. Every chisel needs sharpening at the right angle with the right method in order to produce the smoothest cuts.
In 1 Peter 3:15, we read: “But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear” (KJV). In the context surrounding this Scripture, Peter deals with the suffering of the saints for being believers in the risen Christ. He reminds his readers of God’s presence in their lives, for His eyes are upon the saints, and how He will hear their prayers. They can rely on Him during their times of suffering, but when those who persecute them ask, it is their duty to answer. They are supposed to be ready with an apologia, a reasonable and logical defense of the faith, while displaying humility towards their persecutors and a reverence for God and His truth. Believers can only perform this duty if they remain sharp.
Like the chisel a woodturner uses for cutting, we must maintain a keen edge by refining our skills so that we function properly. There are three ways in which we can do so today: the diligent study of God’s Word, continual prayer for God’s wisdom and guidance, and fellowship with other believers. All too often, believers stop at the basics of the Gospel, but we need to seek maturity. What have you studied this last week to hone your edge? Believers let their prayers become simply another religious activity. What guidance have you been seeking? Likewise, believers fail to discuss the Word of God together. How often do you sharpen each other by studying the Word of God (Proverbs 27:17)? Let us all find ways to perform our duty by standing ready and remaining sharp.
Prayer of the day:
Dear heavenly Father,
You give us the skills to remain sharp. We always need refining on our knowledge of the Scriptures because we live busy lives and can lose our focus on You. Help us to have the chance to study Your Word with other believers. It is important to sharpen our skills to better serve You and others. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen!
