The Power of a Song

The Power of a Song
“Let the teaching of Christ live in you richly. Use all wisdom to teach and instruct each other by singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs with thankfulness in your hearts to God.” – Colossians 3:16

Have you ever noticed yourself singing? How about when you are at church and when the praise band begins to sing and play their instruments. I know I have. I also notice myself singing in my car to a song on the radio. Some of the songs I hear move me in a way that I cannot explain. The feeling is the power of a song. Sometimes a song can make me happy or even make me feel sad and cry. However, not every tear that I cry is negative but is a positive one because it is caused by a song that is about God.

A song that can move a person this way is a song that is sung in worship or played on a Christian radio station. It seems like the right song is played at the right time and can move us to sing our hearts out to the Lord especially when God deserves that kind of praise and glory. The songs we sing should be used to bring glory to God. They are sung to reflect His goodness and to allow us to give Him thanks with our voices (Isaiah 12:5, Psalm 100:1-2).

The Bible is full of verses that reflect God’s glory through a song especially in the Psalms. Look at Psalm 95:1-3 which says:

“Come, let’s sing for joy to the Lord. Let’s shout praises to the Rock who saves us. Let’s come to him with thanksgiving. Let’s sing songs to him, because the Lord is the great God, the great King over all gods.”

Another Psalm is Psalm 100:1-2 which sings and gives thanks to God, “Shout to the Lord, all the earth. Serve the Lord with joy; come before him with singing.” Psalm 150:1-6 shows the Psalmist singing praises to the Lord with his words but also with his instruments:

“Praise the Lord! Praise God in his Temple; praise him in his mighty heaven. Praise him for his strength; praise him for his greatness. Praise him with trumpet blasts; praise him with harps and lyres. Praise him with tambourines and dancing; praise him with stringed instruments and flutes. Praise him with loud cymbals; praise him with crashing cymbals. Let everything that breathes praise the Lord. Praise the Lord!”

Prayer of the day:

Dear heavenly Father,

We want to praise You with a song. A song has the power to move people's hearts and voices. Sometimes in a good way also in a sad way. A song can also move us to sing out to You and use it to sing for You in praise and glory. Please let us use our voices to give You thanks and sing of Your greatness. In Jesus’ great name we pray, Amen!
