The Power to Control Sin
“So, do not let sin control your life here on earth so that you do what your sinful self wants to do. Do not offer the parts of your body to serve sin, as things to be used in doing evil. Instead, offer yourselves to God as people who have died and now live. Offer the parts of your body to God to be used in doing good. Sin will not be your master, because you are not under law but under God’s grace.”- Romans 6:12–14
Sin is dangerous and when we sin it hurts others. It has a negative effect on our relationship with God and with others. Sin separates us from God if we do not turn from it. Everyone will sin because we were born sinners. We inherited the sinful nature from Adam and Eve after they sinned in the Garden of Eden. They disobeyed God by eating fruit from the tree that God told them not to (Genesis 3:6-11). From that day, we all have sinned and fallen short of God’s glory (Romans 3:23).
The good news is that we do not have to let sin control us. God gives us the power to control it. It is done with the help of the Holy Spirit and with Jesus. Once we accept Jesus as our savior, God gives us the Holy Spirit’s power to help not to sin as much. When we sin, we can turn to Jesus. Jesus died on the cross for our sins and our faith in Him makes us right with God. God promises to forgive and forget what we did (Romans 5:1).
We also need to humbly confess and repent of our sins, then God will show us His mercy and grace, so we do not have to be slaves to sin anymore (1 John 1:9).
Prayer of the day:
Dear heavenly Father,
Sin has no power over us. We will sin because we inherited our sinful nature from Adam and Eve. But there is hope for us in Jesus. With His help we do not have to be slaves to sin. We have the Holy Spirit and Jesus to turn to for help. Thank you for Your mercy and grace. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen!
