The Purpose of Jesus’ Death
“God did not send his Son into the world to judge the world guilty, but to save the world through Him.”- John 3:17
Jesus’ death is a gift from God. God sent Jesus into the world to save sinners. Everyone is a sinner, and all have fallen short of God’s glory (Romans 3:23). Jesus willingly gave His life so believers can have eternal life after death (John 10:18). Having the promise of eternal life frees people from the fear of dying. Jesus put an end to death and faith is the only way for people to go to heaven and not hell (John 3:16).
Jesus’ death also defeated Satan. His death fulfills the prophecy in Genesis 3:15 when God told Satan that He would send him an enemy who will crush his head. Satan’s enemy is Jesus. Jesus suffered on the cross, even died, rose from the dead, and won the battle over sin, hell, and Satan. Satan may still win some battles on earth in non-believers’ lives, but for those who have Jesus, He has won the war over sin and death in their lives.
Jesus’ sacrifice shows how much God really loves people. He loves people who are humble, repent of their sins and confess Jesus as their savior. God does not like people who continue to do sinful things. Jesus’ death takes away the sins of the people and because of Jesus, God promises not to remember their sin anymore (Hebrews 8:12).
What a loving Father God is that He does not want anyone to perish, but have eternal life (2 Peter 3:9). He makes it easy to be saved from hell and all anyone must do is believe what Jesus did for them on the cross at Calvary.
Prayer of the day:
Dear heavenly Father,
You did not send Jesus into the world to condemn us to eternal punishment but to save us from it. That shows how merciful You are. But it also shows Jesus’ ultimate love for us that He willingly laid down His life for all who believe. All we need to do is repent, confess we are sinners in need of a savior. It is that easy to have eternal life in heaven with You. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen!
