When Life Seems Unfair
Job is one man who we can relate with when life seems unfair. Job was considered a righteous man who was honest, innocent, and honored God by staying away from evil but still suffered and experienced hard times (Job 1:1). No one can understand why God allowed Job to suffer or go through hard times. He even questioned God about his sufferings. God responded to Job by asking him where was he when God made the earth’s foundation? (Job 38:4)
God is God and does what He pleases (Psalm 135:6). We have no say or control over what God does in our lives (Proverbs 19:21). We can only trust Him when it seems unfair. We might do the same as Job did and question God, especially when we notice other people prospering. Noticing others who are not experiencing the same suffering as us can make us feel abandoned by God or think that He loves others more. If this happens, we can turn to Romans 8:28 as a reminder:
“That in everything God works for the good of those who love Him. They are the people He called, because that was His plan.”
God has a plan for our troubles in life even when it seems unfair. Paul the apostle knew what he experienced was for his own good. Some of his troubles God used to keep him humble (2 Corinthians 12:7). God also allowed Paul to go through tough times to show His power in Paul's weaknesses (2 Corinthians 12:8-9). Jesus is another person whose suffering seems unfair but was allowed by God to fulfill His great plan of salvation (Isaiah 53:5, 1 Peter 3:18). Jesus’ death on the cross allows us not to have to suffer anymore after this life that seems unfair.
Prayer of the day:
Dear heavenly Father,
Life is not always easy. Sometimes it seems unfair that others prosper. When we feel that way, please help us to know that You are working in our lives for our good. Give us a way to find peace in You, instead of questioning You. You are God who sits on Your throne in heaven and does what You please. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen!
