Who is Your Master?

“No one can serve two masters. The person will hate one master and love the other or will follow one master and refuse to follow the other. You cannot serve both God and worldly riches.” –Matthew 6:24

When someone tries to serve two people at once, for some reason it is difficult to do. One person gets more attention than the other or the other one is sometimes forgotten. It is similar to when we try to serve God and other things like worldly riches. We cannot serve both since one will became more important than the other. God wants us to serve Him more than anything else. We serve God first because He is our only source of true happiness. Plus, serving him will bring Him glory.

It is impossible to serve two masters. One master will take precedence, loyalty, and obedience over the other in our life. That will lead us to idolatry. Idolatry destroys our unique, intimate relationship with God by replacing Him with something else. We can learn from the Galatians; they once worshipped idols of wood and stone—false gods. If we continue to make other things our god instead of God of heaven, Paul warns us that we will not inherit the Kingdom of heaven (Galatians 5:19-21).

Turning from God and making things our master will bring us a lot of trouble (Psalm 16:4). It is not worth wanting objects on earth more than God because they are temporary things that can be stolen or destroyed (Matthew 6:19-20). However, serving and wanting God instead leads to heaven, a place that cannot be taken from us and that lasts forever.

Prayer of the day:

Dear heavenly Father,

We want You to be our Master. Please guide our hearts and minds to You. You are our only true source of happiness, and hope for salvation. We cannot serve two masters because we will love one more than the other. If we love things more than You, it will lead to idolatry and separation from You. Give us the desire to want You more than anything else. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen!
