Wonderfully Made

"For you formed my inward parts You wove me in my mother's womb. I will give thanks to you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made wonderful are your works, and my soul knows it." - Psalm 139:13-14

Over the last 50 years or so, computers have revolutionized our society. They have amazed and terrified us with their potential in numerous fields. Tasks that seem too delicate or mundane for human hands, such as brain surgery or cooking burgers at a fast food restaurant, can be programmed and performed by computers. The applications are almost unlimited, even though the field is still in its infancy. It is an awesome feat of human ingenuity. However, as advanced as our technology is, it has all been created using two simple commands of what is called binary code. The computer knows only two things: my power is on - "1", or my power is off - "0". Every technological feat comes down to those two elements of basic code.

Now consider the human body and mind. We are all formed and programmed using four base elements - Adenine, Guanine, Cytosine, and Thymine, our DNA. These four base pairs are the instructional proteins through which God designed us all. No technological marvel can compare. The human mind process information faster and to a greater extent than any processor we can fathom. The human eye focuses faster and with greater clarity than any lens or camera. Most importantly, no computer or robot could ever be "you." Your personality, and physical features, down to the exact number of hair follicles and the specific shade of color of your eyes is predetermined by your DNA. God formed you with love and exacting detail. He used His own computer code. God cries out from within us. He says, "I'm here! I love you, and I created you just as you are.”

Any time I think about our DNA, I cannot help but see God's design. It is an intricate language that is both simple and terribly complex. It shouts out to creation that "I am." Paul states this so beautifully when he told the Roman believers:

“That which is known about God is evident within them for God made it evident to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse. For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools..." (Romans 1:19-22).

God has made His designing hand so evident, that Paul says that they are without excuse who deny His existence and role in creation. Later, in the rest of Romans 1 and through Chapter 3, Paul makes it known that God designed us for a purpose, and when we deny Him by not fulfilling our purpose, we have rejected His plan. God gave us the law to show us the perfect way for us to live together, yet we are told that because of sin no man can be justified in God's sight by keeping the law. The law only brings the knowledge of sin (Romans 3:20). We are all guilty before God.

God loves us and fulfils the law for us through His Son. Jesus kept the law perfectly, because we could not. Faith in Him and His sacrifice allows us to become a new creation. We died to the flesh and came to life in His Spirit so that we can truly live. Jesus told His followers, "This is my command that you love one another just as I have loved you (John 15:12).” Here is the key: the law of liberty is fulfilled through our love. Jesus even said that the whole law is fulfilled when we love God and love each other (Mark 12:33). God designed us for love.

God formed each one of our features and traits to give Him honor, glory, and to love each other. Worship is not simply the songs we sing but is the life we live. We acknowledge Him with each breath, and shout, "I am a child of God."
